Ekki Syamsulhakim has been a lecturer (lektor) at the Department of Economics and a researcher at the Center for Economics and Development Studies (CEDS), Universitas Padjadjaran, since 1999. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics and development studies from Padjadjaran University (1998) and obtained a master’s degree in applied economics from Monash University, Clayton, Australia (2003).
Ekki’s research area is in applied microeconomics, with a special focus on household and family economics; human development economics; education economics; and health economics. He has in-depth knowledge of microeconometric methods and impact evaluation approaches (including RCT and Quasi-Experimental Designs).
Outside of academia, Ekki has a long tenure as a professional economist and evaluator working with both domestic and international organizations. He worked at the World Bank from 2019 to 2024, as a Senior Social Protection Specialist, leading technical assistance for Indonesian Government Agencies and supporting operational activities for better delivery of social protection. Before that, he worked at the TNP2K Secretariat from 2014 to 2019 where his last position was the Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, responsible for major activities in the monitoring and evaluation of Indonesia’s poverty reduction programs.
Furthermore, Ekki has served as an economic and evaluation consultant for various international agencies, including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Overseas Development Institute (London), Results in Health (Netherlands), the World Vegetable Center (Taiwan), and the Australian Council for Educational Research.
Ekki has published academic papers and research reports in leading journals, including the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, and the Journal of Health Economics, as well as contributing to World Bank Reports and Asian Development Bank Independent Evaluation Reports.
He is also a reviewer for academic journals, namely the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization (H-Index 136; 2024 Quartiles: Q1 in Economics and Econometrics; Q1 in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management); and Poverty & Public Policy (H-Index 17; 2024 Quartiles: Q1 in Cultural Studies; Q2 in Sociology and Political Science).
Ekki is a member of several professional associations, including the International Health Economics Association (IHEA), East Asian Economic Association (EAEA), Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE), Regional Science Association (RSA), Regional Science Association International (RSAI), Indonesian Regional Science Association (IRSA), and Human Developmentand Capability Association (HDCA).
